Br Armando Cossa elected Custos of Guinea Bissau

The Friars of the Custody of St Francis of Assisi in Guinea Bissau gathered in Chapter from 31 January to 4 February 2022 in Bra, Bissau, have elected Br Armando Cossa as Custos and Br Michael Daniels as Vicar of the Custody. In addition, the following were elected to the office of Councillors: Br Papa Paulo Nanque, Br Jorge Imbana, and Br André Nama.

Br Cossa was born in Nhacra, Oio region. He made his first vows in 1991, solemn vows in 1997 and was ordained a priest on 2 May 1998.

The Custody of St Francis of Assisi of Guinea Bissau, dependent on the Province of St Anthony of the Friars Minor of Northern Italy, was created in 2005 due to the merger of two Franciscan foundations of the Venetian and Portuguese provinces.

The Guinean Custody currently has nine houses, in Blo, Caboxanque, Canchungo, Cumura, Nhuma, Quinhamel and one in Senegal at Rufique. The friars engage in pastoral service, education and health by running a hospital in Cumura, with paediatric and maternity services as well as wards for people suffering from leprosy, tuberculosis, HIV and Covid.

Br Antonio Scabio, delegate of the Minister Provincial of Northern Italy, presided over the Chapter.
