Comunicato of the General Definitory May 2017

 

The Minister General and the Definitory met at the General Curia between 8th and 19th May 2017. Three days of the second week (15th-17th May) were devoted to the annual meeting with the Presidents of Conferences of Ministers Provincial.

The ordinary work of the Definitory was suspended for Tuesday 9th May so that the Minister General and Br. Antonio Scabio, Definitor General, could participate in the Chapter held at Greccio to inaugurate the new Province of St. Bonaventure of the Friars Minor, in Italy, incorporating the brothers of the former Provinces of Saints Peter and Paul (Rome) and St. Bernardine of Siena (L’Aquila -Abruzzo). In the course of the Chapter, the first government of the new Province, elected the previous day by the Minister General and Definitory, was announced:

  • Minister Provincial: Br Luigi Recchia;
  • Vicar Provincial: Br  Fabio Catenacci;
  • Provincial Definitors: Br. Riccardo Burratin; Br. Luciano De Giusti; Br. Daniele Di Sipio; Br. Alessandro Partini; Br.  Carlo Serri; Br.  Nando Simonetti.

 

When they resumed work, the Minister and Definitory considered over 111 files (plichi), dealing with a wide range of issues from around the Order; they examined the personnel requirements of a number of houses and Entities dependent on the Minister General; they did some further planning for the Plenary Council of the Order that will take place in June 2018; and they set in motion the process of consultation to find candidates to replace Br. Lóránt Orosz as General Definitor.

The Minister and Definitory elected as Procurator General Br. Ivan Sesar, Definitor General. They ratified the election of some new Ministers Provincial and the re-election of some others:

  • Jakub František Sadílek, Minister Provincial of the Province of St. Wenceslaus, in the Czech Republic.
  • Teofil Czarniak, Minister Provincial of the Province of the Immaculate Conception of the BVM, in Poland.
  • Juan María Martínez de Ilarduia Fernández de Troconiz, Minister Provincial of the Province of Arantzazu, in Spain.
  • Yusuf Bagh, Custos of the Custody of St. John the Baptist, in Pakistan.
  • Oliver Ruggenthaler, Province of St. Leopold, in Austria and Italy.

The Minister and Definitory elected a number of Visitators General during the Tempo forte. These included:

  • Pedro Olayo Guillén, of the Province of Saints Francis and James, in Mexico, as Visitator of the Province of St. Junipero Serra, also in Mexico.
  • Iko Skoko, of the Province of the Assumption of the BVM, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as Visitator of the Custody of the Annunciation of the BVM, in Albania and Montenegro.
  • João Carlos Karling, of the Province of St Francis, in Brazil, as Visitator of the Province of the Assumption of the BVM, in Brazil.
  • Dominique Joly, of the Province of Blessed John Duns Scotus, in France and Belgium, as Visitator of the Province of St Mary of the Angels, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Updates were received from all of the major offices of the General Curia. These included the Economato, the General Secretariat for the Missions and Evangelisation, the General Secretariat for Formation and Studies, the Office of Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation, the Development Office, the Communications Office. These updates are now a regular feature of every Tempo Forte and serve as a useful means of communication.

The Definitory made several decisions regarding candidates in initial formation in several of the Entities dependent on the Minister General. Approval was also given for ordination to the diaconate of Br. Jerome Vungh Za Langh, of the Foundation of St Francis in Myanmar.

The Defintory approved some minor modifications made to the Particular Statutes of the Province of St. Leopold, in Austria and Italy. Due to the pressure of time, it was not possible to consider amendments to the Particular Statutes of other Entities that were presented for approval. These will be considered during the next Tempo Forte which begins on 17th July.
