30 Oct Deepavali Greetings
We wish the people of India and all her leaders, both secular and religious, a very happy Deepavali, the Festival of Lights. It is indeed a joyful and a spiritual experience to see all the homes and offices and worship places lit with millions of diyas (Lights) and candles. All the lighted diyas and candles express the very essence of this Festival, namely, the deep-down desire in every human being for the light to be victorious over darkness, good to be victorious over evil, truth to be victorious over falsehood, and dharma to be victorious over adharma. Light symbolizes illumination, enlightenment, knowledge, and wisdom. What is externally light is internally knowledge. Let the celebration of Deepavali be a living reminder of the importance of knowledge and righteous living. Let it be a living reminder to seek the path of dharma, righteousness, goodness, truth and justice. Let it be the affirmation of the universal human belief that it is the good that ultimately triumphs, and not evil.
Let the whole world be always concerned with Light and Truth. The motto of the Indian nation is “Satyameva Jayate”,“Truth alone be victorious”. May the celebration of this Festival of Lights enlighten the minds and hearts of all people to work for the well-being and happiness of all, “loka samastha sukhino bhavantu”. Ishavasyopanishad, verse 1 invites us to look upon the world as the dwelling place of the Lord, “Isha vasyam idam sarvam”; everything in this changing world is enveloped by the Lord. And so, all are exhorted to live and work in the world with this awareness of the Divine Presence, with a spirit of renunciation and detachment, free from greed and covetousness, and with love, respect and sensitivity. The desire and prayer of every human being from the Vedic times is, “Loka samastha sukhino bhavantu”, let the whole world be happy. We are able to keep the world happy and peaceful when we realize that the whole world is filled with the presence of the Lord – “Isha vasyam idam sarvam”.
Therefore, let each diya that is lit for the Deepavali Festival be lit in the awareness of the Divine Presence within, and with the prayer of the sages and saints, “Lead us Lord from the unreal to the real; from darkness to light; and from death to Immortality”. Let this Festival bring good will, sharing, peace and prosperity to the whole world. Happy Deepavali to all!
