“Francis between the lines”

The celebration of the 800th anniversary of Italian literature

14 January 2025

The project “Francesco tra le righe” (Francis between the lines), presented by the Seraphic Province of St. Francis of the Friars Minor of Umbria and Sardinia, takes the opportunity of the Franciscan Centenary as the ideal beginning of literary production in Italian.
Although the Canticle of the Creatures is not chronologically the first literary work in the Italian vernacular, its relevance and the relevance of its author offer the opportunity for a celebration of the eight hundred years of Italian literature, in its history and in its present.

Francis between the lines  aims to make the Canticle of the Creatures and Italian literature a crossroads of encounter and reflection on the central issues of the human and current affairs, to bring citizenship closer to the world of poetry and contemporary literature.
Through a series of meetings with prominent personalities from the world of Culture and Literature, Francis between the lines promotes the knowledge of contemporary Italian literary production as a reading of reality in its various dimensions and as a proposal for paths of awareness and human, social, cultural and spiritual growth, with the aim also of involving young people in the world of literature, with whom they do not have a spontaneous dialogue.

Francis between the lines will open on the 5th February at the friary of Monteripido (PG, Italy) and will have its official inauguration on the 26th February with the extraordinary event of the reading of the Canticle in 30 languages at the friary of San Damiano, the place of the composition of the Canticle.
Each meeting includes a discussion on a theme related to the Canticle of the Creatures, also with an actualizing slant, to which will be added readings of texts and dialogue with the audience present. Francis’ text will be the subject of a reflection by poets and intellectuals in all its various facets.
