On the 12th October 2025, the Franciscan Province of Saints Francis and James in Mexico, together with the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, celebrated their patron saint: Our Lady of Expectation of Zapopan. Nearly 3 million people participated in the traditional "Pilgrimage" or "Carrying of the Virgin of Zapopan," which has taken place every year since 1734 after visiting all the churches and parishes in the city.
On that first occasion, the image was brought to the city to ask for her intercession during the heavy rains that plagued the city. She was named Patroness against lightning storms and epidemics in the Cathedral of Guadalajara, and an oath was sworn to carry her to the city every year. Since then, thousands of people have joined this tradition of carrying the image of the Virgin from the Cathedral to its Basilica.
Currently, the Friars Minor of the Zapopan Convent and neighbouring fraternities in the Province participate in this feast of the Virgin Mary and support all preparations, reception of pilgrims, and care for the pilgrims who come to visit the image of Our Lady.
This is one of the most deeply rooted Catholic traditions in western Mexico and is the largest Marian procession in the country. It has been declared an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The Franciscan friars of this portion of the Order give thanks to God for the graces he has bestowed on his people through the intercession of Our Lady of Zapopan, Patroness of the Franciscan Province of Saints Francis and James.
