Arrival in Lubumbashi of the Minister General, Br Massimo Fusarelli

The continuation of the visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo

Br Massimo Fusarelli, Minister General, and the Definitor General for Africa, Br Victor Quematcha, accompanied by Br José Nzau Nzau, Vicar of the Province of St. Benedict the African, arrived in Lubumbashi on Wednesday, the 7th February 2024. They were welcomed on the runway of Luano International Airport by Br Bernard Kabila, Provincial Secretary, and some members of the Franciscan Family. A word of welcome was addressed to him by the young friends of St. Francis of Assisi of the Franciscan Youth.

At the exit of the airport, the OFM friars, the Brothers and Sisters of the Franciscan Family welcomed their guests with affection and fraternal greetings. Then the procession headed to the Provincial Curia where some Brothers and Sisters of the Franciscan Family gave a most worthy welcome to the daughters and sons of the “Poor man of Assisi” - “Poverello d'Assisi”.

Br Massimo immediately turned to the family asking them to pray for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially in the Eastern part. Subsequently, a word of welcome, on behalf of the Minister Provincial, Br André Murhabale, was addressed to him by the Vicar Provincial.

The novices sang a welcome hymn, thereafter, the Minister General imparted his blessing to the large Franciscan family who had come to welcome him.

From 10th to 12th February Br Massimo and Br Victor went to the fraternity of Saint John XXIII in Kolwezi. They were welcomed by Br Gustave Mbak, the Guardian of the fraternity, and by the local Franciscan Family in the chapel of the fraternity. Thereafter, followed the song of thanksgiving and finally the blessing of the Minister General to all the assembly. Br Massimo met the friars in formation, later the formators and the Franciscan Family. The meeting with the Minister General looked at the fraternity in all its dimension. He underlined on the importance of witness to the world, a witness that is efficacy and significative.

After the meeting followed the solemn eucharistic celebration. In the afternoon, the Minister General visited some fraternities of the Franciscan Family such as the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Mary, the Franciscan Sisters of the Reign of Jesus Christ and one family of the Franciscan Third Order. He concluded the day by presiding the meeting with the Provincial Definitory.

Br Massimo and Br Victor visited the Parish of Christ the Saviour and Kwetu house which accommodates the children who have no families under the care of Br Damien Isabel. After an interview with the Bishop of Kolwezi, Mons. Richard Kazadi, the brothers left for Mbuji-Mayi to visit the Province of Saint Mary of the Angels.
