At the end of 2017, the town of Lyon picks up the Franciscan rhythm

03 November 2017
In the launch of the Jubilee of the arrival of the first Franciscan friars in France, some 12 friars, a mixed group of Capuchin, Conventual and Friars Minor, are aiming to announce the Gospel in the heart of Lyon from 20th to 26th November. From the thirteenth century there has been an active Franciscan presence in Lyon, of Brothers and Sisters, consecrated and lay people. Recalling that in 1517, Pope Leo X officially recognized the different branches in the Order of the Friars Minor, the friars in 2017 want to underline that which unites them: wanting to go out towards the other person, who is a brother. During this mission in Lyon, called “ Being brotherly in the town”, the friars will be gathered in St. John’s Cathedral. They will meet the young people of the Sainte-Marie de Lyon College run by the Marist Fathers and they will go out two by two on foot through the streets of the old town of Lyon, as Jesus instructed his followers. To those whom they meet, they will announce peace, the peace that comes from God, the peace that is to be welcomed, the peace that is to be shared. There will be numerous events in the evenings amongst which a conference featuring Cardinal Phillipe Barbarrin. Another thing to take note of is the arrival in Lyon of the exhibition, “Francis of Assisi, a timeless man”. The exhibition traces the important stages of the life of St. Francis through a hundred works of art, and amongst the exhibits will be the original cloak of St. Francis, loaned for the occasion by the French Capuchins.
