Today, the 9th August 2025, Br. Stanislao Loffreda (Montepulciano, 1932), belonging to the Franciscan Province of St. James in the Marche region, Italy, returned to the Father’s House. He was a graduate in Sacred Scripture (Pontifical Biblical Commission, 1961) and in Theology (Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, 1962), and he obtained a Master'sdegree in archaeology from the Oriental Institute of Chicago (1967). From 1978 to 1990 he directed the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem, where he has been a professor emeritus until today.
He conducted numerous excavation campaigns, in particular in Capernaum (1968-91; director since 2000), where together with Br. Virgilio Corbo discovered the House of Peter. He also carried out excavations at the fortress of Machaerus, in Jordan (1978-81), to which he dedicated several publications.
His memory is a blessing and represents an invitation to the younger generations to devote themselves to biblical studies, including archaeological studies in the places of our salvation.
