On the 11th July, 2025, a meeting was held at the General Curia of the Friars Minor in Rome between the Minister General, Br. Massimo Fusarelli, the Definitor General, Br. César Külkamp, and 27 members (24 lay educators and 3 friars) of the FAE - University Center of the Franciscan Province of the Immaculate Conception of Brazil. The Brazilian delegation is in Italy for an intensive course in Franciscan spirituality in the places of our charism: Assisi, La Verna, Valle Santa di Rieti and Rome.
In an atmosphere of listening and sharing, the educators presented the daily challenges of their work with young university students and families. The participants emphasized how their role goes beyond the simple transmission of academic content, constituting a true accompaniment in the life processes of young people.
"Many students excel academically, but they need to be assisted and listened to," the educators highlighted, describing complex situations, including youth psychological distress. These educators perform coordination and leadership functions in addition to teaching. In the dialogue, the group's appreciation for Franciscan spirituality as a spiritual and educational journey emerged, offering concrete answers to contemporary challenges.
The Minister and the Definitor emphasized: "Today we do not consider the Franciscan charism as a closed environment or property of the friars. The charism is broader than us." All those who share the evangelizing presence with the friars participate in the Franciscan charism, manifesting it in their own areas, such as education. This inclusive vision is fundamental to understanding the current Franciscan mission.
During the meeting, reference was made to the recent Chapter of Mats in Assisi, with the wide participation of friars, religious and lay people. This event initiated a synodal journey to reflect on the life and mission of the Order and the Franciscan charism in the entire Franciscan Family.
The meeting demonstrated how Franciscan spirituality continues to inspire and guide educators, offering tools to face contemporary challenges in the spirit of St. Francis.
