Senegal: A New Franciscan Presence

On the 2nd of October 2015, the beginning of the month for missions, the Franciscan Fraternity of “La Porziuncola” of Dakar was inaugurated. It is the first presence of the Order of Friars Minor in Senegal. The members of the international fraternity are Br. Vincenzo Brocanelli, Br. José and Br. Antonio of Guinea Bissau, and Br. Celistin of Congo RDC. The opening ceremony was presided by Mons. Benjamin Ndiaye, Archbishop of Dakar. Also present were Br. Victor Kematcha, Custos of the Custody of S. Francis of Guinea Bissau, on which the new fraternity is dependent, Br. Manuel Corullón, Secretary of the African Conference of Provincials and Custodes, as well as numerous religious priests and friends, showing the healthy presence of the Franciscan Family in Dakar. The new fraternity, called The Portiuncula, refers to the beginnings of the Order, placing the origins of the presence of the Friars Minor in Senegal under the protection of Our Lady of the Angels.
