Work of Friar Bernardino De Sahagún, OFM: UNESCO Memory of the World

26 October 2015
At its meeting from 4 to 6 October 2015 in Abu Dhabi in the UAE, the UNESCO International Committee on the "Memory of the World" unanimously approved to include in the International Register of the Memory of the World, the work of Friar Bernardino de Sahagun , the sixteenth century missionary of the Province of the Holy Gospel in Mexico and father of American anthropology. His two major works, the Madrid Codex and the Codex Florentino, written in the Nahuatl language deal not only with the religious background of ancient Mexican culture but also with history, literature, cosmology, art and medicine. On October 20 of this year, the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico, with Friar Francisco Morales, director of the “Sahagun Franciscan Studies in the Humanities Center” in attendance, celebrated this important award that honors the culture of the world, of Mexico and of the sixteenth century Franciscan missionaries.
