General Procuration

About us

The General Procuration handles and concludes, on behalf of the Minister General, all the practices of the Order to be carried out at the Holy See (except those concerning the causes of beatification and canonization, which are the responsibility of the Postulation Office). The Legal Commission and the Commission for Appeals to the Minister General also report to the General Procuration.

The tasks of the General Procuration are:

  • to study the material coming from the Entities of the Order, verify the correctness of the procedures and the completeness of the documentation, then send it, with its own observations, to the Minister General for passage to the Definitory, and then present it to the competent Dicastery of the Holy See;
  • to take care of the relationships with the Dicasteries of the Holy See serving all the needs of the Order (the most frequent contacts are with the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, with the Congregation for the Clergy and with the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments for the practices of dispensation from celibacy, with the Apostolic Penitentiary, for our confessors at the Lateran and in St. Peter's; there is no lack of relationships with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, the Secretariat of State, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and other Pontifical Councils);
  • to perform a “consultancy” function for the General Definitory and for the Ministers, Custodes and Provincial and Custodial Secretaries, on everything that concerns the legal field (Code of Canon Law, General Constitutions, General Statutes, etc.) and the various procedures;
  • to offer their contributions on the occasion of the training courses for the new Ministers and Custodes and for the General Visitors on canonical, disciplinary and procedures-related issues in cases of abuse above minors.
